Making clean drinking water in area of disaster

10-08-2012
Local health workers, volunteers and the local community should be provided with the best possible means of prevention and treatment in case of a disaster like an eartquake, Tsunami or massive flood. An acute problem for the population is the availability of safe drinking water and adequate shelters.

For this purpose, doctors and pharmacists from Leiden ans rechnicians from the Technical University of Delft developed MUST protocols (Medical Update SMS Tsunami). These documents contain detailed instructions for the preparation of safe drinking water with locally available means, protocols for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diarrhoea and dehydration. Furthermore detailed instructions for constructing shelters from sandsbags and waste meterials. The protocols have been translated into several languages.
